These days I’ve been binging on an anime series titled One Piece.

One Piece, anime series

Luffy and the One Piece

As a child, Monkey D. Luffy dreamed of becoming King of the Pirates. But his life changed when he accidentally ate the Gum-Gum Fruit, an enchanted Devil Fruit that gave him the ability to stretch like rubber. Its only drawback? He’ll never be able to swim again–a serious handicap for an aspiring sea dog!

Years later, at 17 years old, Luffy sets off on his quest to find the “One Piece,” said to be the greatest treasure in the world. The one who’ll find the One Piece will be called King of the Pirates.

Along the way, 10 people with dreams and abilities of their own, joined him in his quest to become King of the Pirates, becoming his friends, his Nakama.

「仲間」-pronounced “Nakama” is a Japanese word that translates to your friend, teammate, or comrade. Nakama is recalling a close, family-like relationship. The word is referred to as being part of a group or community in a plural sense. The boundary of considering someone a Nakama is different for individuals. When you have gone through hardship with someone, they are your Nakama.

Luffy and his “Nakama” explore the sea in search of the greatest treasure “One Piece” to become the King. He gathers his crewmates by asking them “仲間になってくれ” which means “join us” in English.

More expressions include:

– “I have a strong teammate”
– “If you’re a good guy, I am making you my teammate “
– “We must include the navigator as part of our team “

Quotes from the series “ONE PIECE”

In the context of One Piece, Nakama refers to people who share the same goal and destiny as you, like Luffy’s Nakama shared his destiny in the pursuit of their individual goals.

Together, they formed a friendship and a bond tested by a lot of battles, fighting for each other and with each other as they go on a journey on the seas filled with adventures in the pursuit of their dreams – the Straw Hat Pirates!

3 Life Lessons from Luffy and the One Piece anime series

This anime series is surprisingly full of life lessons that we can glean from. Here are 3 things I see in Luffy that I want to apply in my life:

Luffy Lives His Passion

Luffy loves fun and adventure. He sets out to sea primarily to see what fun and adventure he can find in his journey.

Money is not his primary motivator. His thirst for adventure drives him.

He doesn’t even think too far ahead. He lives moment by moment. Living and experiencing what life gives him at each moment to the full.

He acts as needed. He applies his skills and power to what is needed at each moment.

Luffy knows what He wants

Even when he was a child, Luffy knew what he wanted: To be a King of the Pirates.

His grandfather trained him so hard as a child to fight and become a good Navy soldier. But Luffy was undeterred. He wants to be the King of the Pirates.

He knows he has to face and fight formidable foes to fulfill his dream. He hones his skill and power to meet every challenge and foe.

He lives his passions and pursues them with all his might but he always has his eye on his dream and what he wants. And his journeys and adventures all happen in the pursuit of his dream.

He’s always vocal about his dream too, not shying away from admitting it to people. He even uses it when he introduces himself: “My name is Luffy, I’m the man who’s going to be King of the Pirates!”

In fact, being open about his dream, not just through his words but most importantly his actions, he attracted and inspired people who want to help him fulfill his dream and their own along the way.

Luffy Cares Deeply for His People and Fights for them

As much as his dream is important to him, his friends are equally important. He fights for his friends as much as he fights for his dream.

He even hones his power and skills so he can protect his friends, especially those not strong enough to fight for themselves.

In fact, his fights are not just to bring anybody down. His fight is against people who oppress those who have become his friends. Not just his friends from his inner circle, but people he meets along his journey.

And because he is honest and true in his dealings with people, he makes friends who are honest and true as well.

He’s loyal to a fault to his friends, fighting for them with his life,  and in return, his friends are loyal to him as well, willing to give their lives to fight with him.

Applying the 3 Life Lessons from Luffy and the One Piece

What can we learn from Luffy that we can apply in our lives?

  • Live life as an adventure
  • Live your mission with a passion
  • Live in love of God and neighbor

Live life as an Adventure

When the Lord allowed me to fulfill my dream of working from home and have my income increased 5x, I began to settle and be complacent. I thought I could just continue, working on this income until I retire.

I stopped dreaming. I stopped living for a purpose.

Everything became routine for me. I wake up, work, eat, then sleep. Rinse and Repeat. Without a dream and a purpose, I lost my drive.

But God is so good. He never allowed me to just settle. He’s a progressive God. He brings us from glory to glory. From one dream to bigger dreams.

But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as from the Lord, the Spirit.

2 Corinthians 3:18 New American Standard Bible – NASB 1995 (NASB1995).

The Lord awakened in me bigger dreams. Dreams that I actually hold from when I was young. Dreams so big that I know I can’t achieve them without Him helping me.

That’s God’s dream for us. He wants us to live life to the full until we overflow.

I have come to give you everything in abundance, more than you expect—life in its fullness until you overflow!

John 10:10 The Passion Translation (TPT)

Live your mission with a passion

Don’t settle for less than what God has planned for you. That desire that you have to do something? That dream that never goes away? That may be God speaking to you with His still small voice to follow and live it.

I hear the Lord saying, “I will stay close to you, instructing and guiding you along the pathway for your life. I will advise you along the way and lead you forth with my eyes as your guide. So don’t make it difficult; don’t be stubborn when I take you where you’ve not been before. Don’t make me tug you and pull you along. Just come with me!”

Psalms 32:8-9 The Passion Translation (TPT)

What’s your dream? Do you want to be a writer like me? Then do it. You have a job that takes a lot of hours? Then pursue your dream on the side.

I have 2 online jobs. But I also started pursuing my dream of earning passive income through my writing. I just dedicate 2 hours daily to this dream, what I consider my most important task, before I work on my two jobs.

It doesn’t matter if this will bear fruit or not. Even if I never earn from this pursuit, I love doing this, writing to share about living in Christ, so I do this daily, 2 hours a day.

Try it. See for yourself. Live your mission with a passion.

Live in love

Fulfilling your dream is useless if you have no one to share it with. Life becomes richer when shared with friends and family. And above all, with God.

I invest money for God’s Kingdom, and for my dreams but I never hesitate to spend money when it comes to my family and friends too. I’ve long established that as one of my values, what I consider important.

My mission in life is also connected to others: to inspire and encourage dreamers to pursue and live their dreams in Christ. I want to inspire and encourage at least a billion people with inspiration from the Word of Christ.

That’s why I want to earn so much. So I can give so much: 99% tithe to fund the assignments of God, blessing at least a billion people in my generation and for generations to come.

Your life will only get rich if your dream is connected with loving others with the love of Christ.

I was browsing Quora for a question I could answer and I came to this question:

I have everything I thought I wanted, and I’m still not happy. Why?

This question got 1.2M views. This simply means people are looking for happiness in life and having all you want may not be enough.

Loving others with the love of Christ is the only way we can be rich and happy at the same time.

Jesus did it for us. He loves us so much He laid down His life for us on the Cross. He wants us to do it for others. To live our lives doing good for others too.

“I’ve told you these things for a purpose: that my joy might be your joy, and your joy wholly mature. This is my command: Love one another the way I loved you. This is the very best way to love. Put your life on the line for your friends. You are my friends when you do the things I command you. I’m no longer calling you servants because servants don’t understand what their master is thinking and planning. No, I’ve named you friends because I’ve let you in on everything I’ve heard from the Father.

John 15:11-15 The Message (MSG)

Now Your Turn

Live life as an adventure. Live it to the full. Do not settle where you are. If you’ve achieved a dream, go on to bigger dreams. Dream God’s dream for you.

Live your mission with passion. Pursue your dreams. Do something each day that will move your dream forward no matter how little.

Live in love to bless others. Connect your dream to others. Love others deeply with the love of Jesus. Jesus has made you his friend. Follow how He gave his life for his friends.

Let’s pray

Dear Lord,

Thank you for making me your friend. Help me live life as an adventure with You as You take me on the journey to achieving my dreams, being blessed and blessing others. In Jesus’ Name.
