My Desired Haven and the FIRE Movement

My Desired Haven

They rejoiced that they were calmed, and he brought them to their desired haven. Let them give thanks to the LORD for his kindness. and his wondrous deeds to the children of men.

Ps 107: 30-31

God brought me to my desired haven.

My dream for the longest time was to have a flexible work that I can do from home which will not only fill my needs but my wants too and will let me be with my family as well.

I never thought that was possible before. Cause back then, I had so many financial difficulties and struggles.

I was a nurse then working in a hospital in Cebu City, Philippines earning only P15k per month. Fixed schedule, fixed place of work. For 20 years. Living single with only my sister and her family nearby. The rest were in Leyte. I love nursing. But I wanted to earn more without going abroad. Cause I never want to be away from my family. I was so frustrated.

Fast forward to several years and I’ve quit my nursing job. It’s been 4 years since then.

I’m now living with my family in Leyte, Philippines working online from home as a virtual assistant, with very flexible hours and as with any online job, I can work anywhere there’s an internet connection. On top of that, my job now helps me earn about P60k a month, 4x my previous job! Which I never truly thought was possible. I only hoped for at least P25k, not even double cause I thought doubling my income is too much of a stretch to ask for!

God ticked every wish box for my desired haven then.

Now I’m even able to share my work and income with my sisters.

More importantly, I’m able to support my family in these times of famine when the Pandemic struck in 2020 and my brother-in-law’s seaman work was put on hold.

Thank You, Lord. You truly have worked marvelous deeds!

Fear and Apprehensions

Not to sound ungrateful but I’m painfully aware of how temporary working online is. I’ve got no benefits whatsoever for medical or retirement. I worry sometimes that my employers will let me go or something will happen to them that will stop all this and then I won’t have any earnings, just like any worker laid off suddenly when the Pandemic hit.

Days ago, while browsing YouTube while working, I stumbled upon a person named Peter Adeney known in the internet world as Mr. Money Mustache. He saved 50-70% of his engineering income for 9 years of his working life, invested it in index funds then retired, living on 4% interest annually off his investments.

He said he and his wife retired around 30 yrs old, with only around $1.2M in investments which allowed them to live on $25k annually. This is only possible because they live frugally: biking or walking everywhere, buying only what they need and they feel can make them truly happy.

Then I realized he’s just one of the many who are in the FIRE movement: Financial independence, retire early.

That ignited a fire within me.

Cause I admit I’ve grown slack. To the point of not dreaming anymore, just cruising along, getting bloated on food and just reading novels or watching movies as much as I can, even sometimes just working a few hours. One of the setbacks of flexi working hours and working on your own is it’s so easy to slacken off cause no one is really on your neck about it.

But it awakened my long-time dream to be a Residual Millionaire, even a residual billionaire which I made a picture of and used as a wallpaper on my computer for easy visualization.

From Fear to FIRE

My desired haven now is to become Financially Independent by earning passive income and residual income. Unworked income, to be clear.

This is now my new Possible-with-God goal: at least earn P18M so that at 4% interest annually, I can replace my 60k monthly income with unworked, passive income.

I pray that since I cannot retire early now so I will just have to retire wealthy

With my work now, earning 60k, I can save 30k: 20k in PAG-IBIG MP2 fund earning 4-8%, locked in for 5 yrs, and 10k buying stocks I like with companies whose products I and my family, and a lot of other people, would buy and use, for capital gains and dividends.

Not counting the dividends and capital gains, that will allow me to save P7.2M in 20 yrs, around when I’m 65 y.o., allowing me to have P24k monthly at 4% interest yearly. Hopefully, our cooperative OCCI’s time deposit vehicle will give that 4% interest.

Also, I was thinking of saving my side hustle income of 5k per month in a savings account for emergencies. But Mr. Money Moustache said he never had an emergency fund stacked away in a savings or checking account where it will earn almost nothing. He keeps it all in his index funds and when he needs an unexpected fund for something, he just sells a few shares and uses that money then refunds it again. That way, his money will always be earning for him while also be available for any unexpected needs that will arise.

That got me changing my thinking: I will keep my side hustle income in our Cooperative’s Time deposit vehicle where it will earn 2-4%, definitely higher than the bank, but still risk-free. On top of that, I can borrow off that from the Coop whenever I have unexpected needs. If I continue to have that income for 20 yrs, God-willing, not counting dividends, I will save another P1.2M.

That will make my nest egg around P8.4M, P28k monthly.

Then with SSS maximum 35 yrs contribution, I hope to have an additional P15k.

That will amount to P42k monthly. Now this is enough for me for basic living.

That’s my Enough number. I’m a blessed Residual millionaire! Amen!

That’s my basic planning. But if I’ve learned anything at all from my previous experiences it’s that God is able to do so much more than we can ask or imagine!

It would be great if I make P30M and have P100k monthly!

Heck, if I truly follow my heart’s desire and dream big, I would ask for a P1B nest egg so I can have P30M monthly. So much more for my own and family’s needs and abundance to bless many others. This will truly make me a blessed billionaire!

I dare to dream sooo big. Why? It’s because I’ve always embraced the saying “to always reach for the moon, so that if you fail, you still land in the stars.” Hahaha.

But seriously, it’s because we have a BIG God. One millionaire said he’s always amazed how people can think so small, when they have soo BIG a God who loves them. I agree wholeheartedly. I am blessed with The Blessing of God, who’s able to do so much more than we can ask or imagine.

So are you.

To Him who by means of His power working in us is able to do so much more than we can ever ask for, or even think of…

Ephesians 3:20 GNBDK

I thought at first, oh it’s too late for me to do something. But in one of his interviews, Mr. Money Mustache was asked when he thinks it is too late to start. He said, “Well, when you’re dead, then it’s probably too late.” Hahaha. Touche.

So true. It’s never too late to start now.

Start dreaming or awaken your dream for making a passive or residual income.

Do something right now. Make a plan and set that in motion. If you are young, good for you! Time is your best friend and compound interest is your servant. If you’re in your prime, like me, still start and do what you can, wherever you can, however you can.

But remember, do everything with God. For with God, everything is possible!

So I claim this, Lord:

They rejoiced that they were calmed, and He brought them to their desired haven. Let them give thanks to the LORD for His kindness and His wondrous deeds to the children of men.

Psalm 107: 30-31

God will bring us to our desired haven. We all can be financially independent and retire rich. Rich in all the ways and things that matter. Living in the abundance of God’s blessings, with health, wealth, and victory.
